FAQ - CA SC-100

What is the purpose of CA SC-100?
The purpose of the CA SC-100 is to improve the quality of the audio signals transmitted by the antenna that you are using. With an unmodified antenna, the signal from one band to the next is not as good as one designed for the same band. It is because of this that the signal that you receive is slightly different when the antenna is used over the same spectrum and from the same direction. The result is that the signal from one band to the next is slightly less strong and less consistent than one designed for the same band. That is why the CA SC-100 must be installed over a coaxial cable. How the CA SC-100 works The CA SC-100 is made up of two parts, a base and a capacitor. The base unit is made up of one capacitor, the C1. This cap is normally only a few microfarads. Because the antenna is very sensitive to small capacitors, it can be very difficult for someone to find a capacitor that is good enough. When the C1 is connected to the antenna, it converts the AC voltage waveform into the form of a direct current. The AC signal from the antenna flows into either of the capacitors C2 or C3. The voltage on the capacitors are changed by the signal and when the frequency is increased, the AC signal is converted back to DC. It is from this DC that the signal is decoded, and then converted back into AC and the signal that you receive. The capacitor C2 (red box) is a 4.7 of capacitor. If the frequency is high enough the AC signal will reach the capacitors and the capacitor voltage will not increase. But if the frequency is low enough the capacitors will start to charge. This will cause DC voltage to rise, causing a short to flow through the capacitor, and it will be reduced. This is called self-resetting (SRI) and a capacitor with this characteristic would be called a short-circuited (SG) capacitor. With an SRI capacitor, the capacitance value must change when the frequency is increased. With a SG capacitor the capacitor value will not change. That is why SG capacitors are very commonly used in high-loss applications such as wireless routers or repeaters. However, a capacitor with this characteristic is not necessarily as good as a SG capacitor.
